Thank you for your interest in the Keppel Health Review. After three incredible years working together as the KHR, we have decided to pause our publication and therefore, while this page reflects our values, we are not accepting applications, pitches, or submissions in the near future.

What are we looking for?

In the interest of granting equal opportunities for development in journalism and communications, we do not require applicants to have direct experience in the relevant roles (other than web and communications as specified below).

We do, however, request that applicants can demonstrate transferable skills to the role applied for, as well as a willingness and eagerness to learn within a group dynamic. We are an open-minded, diverse team that are seeking to engage with health from a critical and fresh perspective, and would like to see creativity and initiative in the applications.

Lastly, all positions in the team are run on a voluntary basis. While we ask for applicants to be able to commit sufficient time each week to KHR duties, we recognise that the capacity to engage can vary. Therefore, a key requirement is an ability to communicate clearly and openly with your team members, as well as to respect and appreciate the work of others.

Please read our recruitment statement for more information.

Which section is right for me?

Essay & Opinion

Essay & Opinion editors should have a passion for bringing diverse, fresh, and critical perspectives to a wide audience. The role involves editing opinion pieces/editorials and personal or reflective essays on topics related to global and public health.

Wellness

This team integrates mainstream ideas about wellness and lifestyle through the lens of global and public health to provide nuanced and evidence-informed content. Wellness editors should have an interest (whether it be academic or personal) in wellness and lifestyle practices of their given culture, region, or background.

Culture

The Culture section comprises 3 subsections—In Retrospect, Currents, and Agora—which collectively cover sociological and anthropological essays; film, music, book reviews; and dialogue between authors and contributors themselves. Culture editors are therefore interested in developing thought-provoking, engaging pieces that explore the dynamic social and cultural forces that contribute to the multiplicity in health and healthcare worldwide.

Creative

Our Creative section engages with pieces in a variety of forms, from written poetry entries, to mixed-media submissions and interviews with artists. Creative Editors should be able to engage with, and have a passion for, expressing concepts of health in abstract, non-traditional, and exciting formats.

Head Editor - Closed for recruitment Jan 2022

Essay & Opinion Head Editor

We are looking for someone to head up our Essay & Opinion (E&O) team. The role of an E&O head editor is to help organise and direct the section editors within the team, and delegate editorial tasks to ensure that we work with contributors to produce engaging, critical, and exciting content in time for each quarterly publication. Along with this, we expect the E&O head editor to take an interest in developing and improving the editorial voice within the team and across the magazine. You will help the executive team to shape the direction of the E&O section, and manage and encourage team members to meet internal goals and magazine-wide deadlines. This role requires a capacity to allocate sufficient time ahead of publication to organise and review submissions and assist the section editors with any queries.

Interview & Investigation Head Editor

Interviews & Investigations (I&I) is an internally directed section of KHR, meaning all material is sourced and developed by the editorial team themselves. The role of an I&I head editor is therefore to help organise and direct the section editors within this team, and delegate roles to ensure that engaging, critical, and exciting content is sourced, developed, edited, and published to a high standard. Unlike the section editor positions, this role requires an ability to manage and engage a small team, as well as liaise with academics, public figures, and changemakers to organise and conduct interviews.  The role will be split equally with our existing head editor, but requires the capacity to allocate sufficient time ahead of publication to organise and review submissions and assist the section editors with any queries.

General Role Expectations

  • Clear communication with your team and the executive team is essential

  • Foster a respectful and supportive team environment

  • Organise meetings and delegate tasks fairly and consistently

  • Ensure your team meets deadlines and other internal targets

  • Manage your time effectively, especially ahead of publication

Staff Writer - Closed for recruitment Jan 2022

The staff-writers for KHR are a diverse team of talented individuals spanning many disciplines and located across the world. As a staff writer for KHR, you are given the freedom to write on the public health topics that most interest you. With articles on the subjects of the climate crisis,

abortion access, traditional medicine, and many more already published, you will find that KHR is a place that welcomes variety in the content it publishes and seeks to push the boundaries on issues that often go undiscussed.

We are particularly looking for staff writers interested in writing pieces for our Creative section, and in writing up interviews with public figures and changemakers for our Interviews & Investigations section.

General Role Expectations

  • Contribute to each of the magazines’ quarterly issues, following the stylistic guidelines created to ensure the best quality work is presented to our readers

  • Attend the biweekly meetings hosted by the Staff-Writer at Large to discuss your writing and develop your writing skills

  • Write in a way that is journalistic in style, accessible, and engaging to readers
